McCarthyism was pretty bad though

This feels quite overrated.

Nowadays, ~80 % of Americans think that freedom of speech restrictions have gone too far. Poll: More Americans now agree political violence may be necessary to right the country

Let's use that as the McCarthyism proxy

YouGov (2025) says that only 51 % of Americans feel cancel culture had gone too far. https://yougov.com/en-us/daily-results/20250919-674e6-1

Do we expect that 80 % will feel the same about cancel culture? Mind you, the real number could be higher because McCarthyism involved harsher policies, although it's maybe similar or somewhat lower due to the association with communism.
